What is the difference between an eating disorder and disordered eating?

Disordered eating is behaviour, thoughts and even emotions that revolve around food and unhealthy eating patterns, as well as excessive worries about one’s body image.

Unfortunately, disordered eating is relatively common and becoming increasingly more so.

Without a doubt, there is a difference between disordered eating and an eating disorder.

Essentially, an eating disorder is a severe form of disordered eating.

To be diagnosed with an eating disorder specific criteria, including physical and psychological associations, need to be met.

  • regular and excessive restricting of food (simply not eating enough)
  • on-and-off dieting (yo-yo dieting)
  • prolonged fasting (fasting that is too long and/or unhealthy, skipping meals)
  • anxiety associated with eating
  • compulsive eating habits
  • loss of self-control
  • guilt and shame associated with eating certain foods
  • binge eating episodes
  • chronic weight fluctuations
  • obsessing about food, body weight and/or shape
  • orthorexia (unhealthy focus on eating in a healthy way)
  • emotional eating or eating for comfort and to cope with unpleasant feelings (anger, sadness, anxiety et al.)
  • overexercising
  • and more

Other Health Professionals To Support Eating Disorder Recovery

In addition to seeking the help of a registered dietitian and nutritionist to help manage an eating disorder and disordered eating, it is important to consult other health professionals. We strongly encourage clients to work in conjunction with more than one health professional for best results.

Therapists, counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists and family doctors can all lend their professional expertise in the journey to management and recovery.

Frequently, the recovery process is a long one, so it’s important to seek the assistance of qualified health professionals with the support of one’s family and friends.
