How a Brain & Mental Health Nutritionist & Dietitian Help

A mental health dietitian and nutritionist can help in many ways, including:

  • Evaluate your typical diet for the purposes of body and brain health.
  • Emphasize the importance of consuming high-quality foods and explain what this entails in terms of food processing.
  • Learn how to regulate blood sugar levels to prevent common mental health concerns, such as irritability, brain fog, “hanger”, anxiety and excessive worrying.
  • Shift towards a diet that primarily consists of whole foods and plant-based foods, which provide sufficient energy and protein.
  • Promote the health of your digestive system (also referred to as the “second brain”) through optimal fibre intake and essential nutrients such as B vitamins, probiotics, fluids, and omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Increase your intake of plant compounds, such as polyphenols and antioxidants, as needed to enhance brain function.
  • Ensure sufficient intake of key nutrients such as zinc and omega-3 to support brain health.
  • Discuss with a brain and mental health nutritionist and dietitian how diet and lifestyle choices affect the production of crucial hormones. This includes cortisol, serotonin, dopamine, and others– all of which influence emotional balance.
  • If a comprehensive nutrient profile blood test is provided, recommend a personalized supplement regimen to address deficiencies or gaps in your diet created by allergies, preferences or religious requirements (optional).
  • Address lifestyle behaviours that can disrupt sleep. Example: factors that affect the circadian rhythm and sleep quality.
